Windows10 deadline

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 support officially ends on October 14, 2025. After that date, devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive standard security updates or patches—leaving them increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks.

But here’s the good news: Microsoft is now offering a free 12-month security update extension, giving organizations until October 2026 before protections fully stop.

What the Windows10 Free Extension Includes

The free Extended Security Updates (ESU) program gives you one extra year of critical security updates. There are a few ways to qualify:

  • Sync your PC settings to OneDrive using the Windows Backup app (requires a Microsoft account).

  • Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.

  • Or, if you prefer, you can purchase ESU directly for $30 per device.

📌 Important: The free extension is not automatic. You must take action through Windows Update to enroll, and it only lasts until October 13, 2026. After that, paid ESU is the only option.

What This Means for Businesses

While the free extension buys some time, it’s only a temporary safety net:

  • Security Risks Still Loom: Delaying too long increases exposure as third-party software vendors also phase out Windows 10 support.

  • Compliance Concerns: Many industries require up-to-date systems; relying on ESU may not meet regulatory standards.

  • Hardware Gaps: Not every PC can upgrade to Windows 11. Older devices may need to be replaced, not just updated.

  • Budgeting Opportunity: The free year gives you breathing room to plan upgrades in stages, avoiding a costly “all at once” migration.

The Path Forward

Microsoft is highlighting several upgrade paths:

  • Windows 11 + Copilot PCs: Modern, AI-powered hardware with built-in security.

  • Windows 365 Cloud PCs: A cloud-based desktop option that runs Windows securely on any device.

  • Phased Migration Using ESU: Use the free year to schedule gradual migrations, testing compatibility and spreading costs over time.

How ClearPath MSP Can Help

At ClearPath, we help businesses make the most of this transition:

  • Assessment & Roadmap: Identify which devices can upgrade, which need replacement, and where Windows 365 makes sense.

  • Staged Rollouts: Plan migrations to minimize downtime and disruption to your operations.

  • Ongoing Security & Support: Whether you move to Windows 11, adopt Windows 365, or temporarily use ESU, we keep your systems secure and compliant.

📞 Don’t wait until 2025. The free ESU extension is a lifeline, not a long-term strategy. Let’s start planning your Windows 10 transition today so your business stays secure, compliant, and ready for the future.
